Occupation
Vice president of Refuge International (www.refugeinternational.com). This nonprofit medical organization brings volunteer medical teams to developing countries and provides surgical and clinical care for impoverished people. Our organization also drills water wells for villages and helps with educational projects. We initiated Adios Lombrices (Goodbye Worms), a deworming project that will eventually reach 4.5 million children. It doesn’t sound glamorous, but if it succeeds, it could change the face of health in Guatemala in a few years.
I’m inspired by
Volunteerism. I work with hundreds of people every year who leave the comforts of home, give up their vacations, sleep on dirt floors, and graciously eat unrecognizable foods in order to bring health to desperate families.
How I recharge
Believe it or not, I clean my house like a maniac! And I laugh. A lot. My sisters are like my own private comedy club. |
Some of my favorite places
Anywhere my husband, Rick, is (corny, I know) … and Machu Picchu, Peru; the pink sands of Harbour Island in the Bahamas; and Antigua, Guatemala.
Greatest achievement
In the 1990s, I started a business importing artisan work from Latin America with $400 in earnings from a garage sale. The business grew and eventually funded my three children’s college educations, provided start-up money for a family’s business in Oaxaca, Mexico, and contributed to the support of a missionary doctor and her pilot husband (my sister and brother-in-law!) in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Necessary extravagance
My 8-year-old Jaguar XJ8. She’s aging like I am. We’ve got some dings and dents, but both of us still have power left under the hood!
Weekends
We recently purchased ranch property in Texas, and I hope to be spending time horseback riding and breathing the fresh air. |
